REMEMBER THAT:
Child abuse and neglect is always under-reported
Substantiation rates are lower than actual for many reasons, but not necessarily because it did not happen....
SOME "LOW" LIGHTS FROM THE REPORT:
· 25% of all abuse and neglect child victims had a history of prior victimization! -- And, we know that if a child has been abused or neglected he/she will most likely pass along that learned behavior.
· An estimated 1760 children died in 2007 as a result of abuse or neglect --- up from 1530 in 2006 and 1450 in 2005 and the rate has been increasing over the past 5 years (now being attributed to better reporting!)
· The youngest children (birth to 1 year) continue to suffer the highest rate of victimization (12% of all!)
· 32% of all victims of maltreatment were younger than 4 years old
· 8% of abuse against our children was sexual
· The vast majority of perpetrators (80%) were PARENTS --- twice as many MOTHERS as fathers
· Although almost one-half of all victims were white and only one-fifth African-American, ---African American children were victimized at the rate of almost 17 per 1,000 vs. white children at 9/1000
· And 38% of child victims received no services following a substantiated report of maltreatment
When someone asks you what we do, there is a very easy answer --- We work to prevent this terrible crime against our most vulnerable by educating, supporting and empowering families to succeed ... thus building a better community, state and nation for everyone.
We ask you...
If we can find the money and time to collect these statistics ...
why can't we find the resources and commitment to PREVENT child abuse and neglect?
